God is in the monitors !!
When selecting a producer, go to their audio page first. If you’re vibing with what’s coming out of the monitors, that’s more important than anything. Often credits can be misleading. Someone may have worked on a record, but it was not in a primary role. You always want to ask what a producer did on a record. What was their exact role and are they comfortable with you calling some of the team involved to ask a few questions ? I’m 100% comfy with that. Every producer should be. A producer’s work has to be “sold” to bring in new talent and a lot of discussion can be exciting. I used to have a company that tracked live concerts and we tracked Motorhead, Janelle Monae, Charles Bradley, City and Colour, Ellie Goulding, Deftones, Opeth, Cyprus Hill, Flaming Lips 2 x and the list goes on. I don’t use these credits. We weren’t hired by the band. We were hired by the Festival. We tracked live audio and video and have great memories. That’s it. It would be hyping and stretching the truth to say I worked with these bands even though ‘technically’ we did. Grey areas and loopholes to draw clients in. I prefer to focus on what’s coming out of the monitors. You can’t hype that. Proof is in the pudding - God is in the monitors !!
